For some, mornings are a chance to jump out of bed and start anew. For others, getting out of bed in the morning requires major effort and they wish they had more time to sleep. With so much going on in the world it's hard not to cycle through the roller coaster of morning emotions. Our bed is safe, comfortable and a sanctuary from all of the demands the world places on us. What felt great yesterday, we wish would just leave us alone for another 10 minutes today!
Is there a way we could be more consistent in our thoughts and feelings so that we can start the day feeling more energised? Does anyone actually jump out of bed in the morning feeling fresh and ready to blaze that trail. The answer to both is - yes!
Here are our top 10 tips to jump start your morning routine. They are quick, easy to implement and will make the world of difference to your morning:
👍 Invest in a pillow that is right for you - There are many pillows out there to choose from. Invest in one that is perfect for your sleep style and supports your neck.
👍 Say no to snoozing - Hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep can actually confuse your body's internal clock and leave you feeling groggy, and with a get lagged feeling. You'll feel much fresher getting up as soon as your alarm goes off. If you really want to sleep in, then set your alarm for 10 minutes later in the morning - but get up then.
👍 Move your alarm clock away from your bed - This will stop you from being able to hit that snooze button. Move it far enough way that you'll need to get up to turn it off.
👍 Leave your phone alone in the morning - Social media and email can be a huge time suck in the morning. And the news can leave you feeling depressed before you even get out of bed.
👍 Open the curtains/blinds as soon as you wake up - Natural light helps your body's internal clock to check in and set your circadian rhythm for the day.
👍 Drink a glass of water before eating breakfast - Before getting out of bed, or whilst still in it, drink a glass of water. Not only is this a quick way to add to your daily water intake but helps you re-hydrate after a night of slumber.
👍 Make the bed - Making the bed helps you get moving in the morning and gives you an immediate sense of accomplishment.
👍 Stretch - Making the bed helps you get moving in the morning and gives you an immediate sense of accomplishment.
👍 Eat breakfast - Have breakfast within an hour of waking up. This way you won't give in to cravings and eat junk. Adding a scoop of protein powder to your smoothie is an excellent way of incorporating protein into your morning routine.
👍 Be consistent with your routine - This is probably the most important of our top 10 tips. In order to support your body's natural sleep and waking cycle developing a routine for the start and end of the day, and sticking to it, is crucial. Go to bed at approximately the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning. There are apps and sleep calculators that can be used to work out your ideal going to bed time based on when you'd like to wake up in the morning.
